The Site That Covers Nigerian Football

Ninety people, pressed onto benches dragged in from a nearby shop, stop talking at the same instant. The television is wide, its audio turned all the way up, and outside, traffic has thinned in the heavy night air.

Football reached Nigeria the way most enduring things tend to: gradually, through imported rules, and then it never left. Boys in every neighbourhood spent their afternoons arguing over squad selections and match results. By the 1960s, football had become into something nobody could have predicted: the one conversation all Nigerians could enter together.

FootballInNigeria.com.ng was created around a clear premise: the country’s football culture was too rich to be covered in a handful of paragraphs. The Super Eagles, with their history of African excellence and their ability to send footballers to every major league on earth, produced a demand for stories that a brief wire report rarely addressed. It examines the NPFL with equal seriousness it gives to the Premier League, and every article is shaped by an understanding of what Nigerian football means to the people who live it.

The football culture of Nigeria exists at a size that the numbers only begin to capture. Football Nigeria journalism exists inside a landscape that is growing faster than almost anyone predicted. Over 84 percent of Nigeria’s web traffic moves through smartphones, which means that the country’s football readers arrive on small screens, Footballinnigeria between other tasks, in brief windows of attention. The game in Nigeria is inseparable from the shared experience of the viewing centre.

The editor at a Nigerian Football publication faces a particular kind of pressure. The reader has been watching football since before they could read. They remember where they stood when the Super Eagles won AFCON. You cannot summarise for them. You cannot skip the context. Good Nigeria football journalism demands more than a scoreline. This is the work that Footballinnigeria has set itself.

The NPFL has twenty professional sides and a calendar that fills months with fixtures. Nigerian players are now embedded in leagues from Scotland to Serie A, representing the country from stadiums their grandparents never visited. Domestic sides like Enyimba hold the CAF Champions League twice, evidence that the domestic game has its own history of continental achievement. All of it is documented at Football in Nigeria, updated daily.

The man in the back of the viewing centre will stay until the final whistle and then head back through a neighbourhood that has come back to its ordinary noise. There is nothing accidental about where loyal readers find themselves returning to. The coverage Nigerian football deserves builds its following the same way the game itself does: slowly, Footballinnigeria then all at once, through trust and accuracy and the feeling of being understood. He will find it at FootballInNigeria.com.ng.
