The Evolution of the World Series of Poker

Every summer, the city of Las Vegas transforms into the absolute epicenter of the global poker community.

However, the origins of this massive global phenomenon are incredibly humble, rooted deeply in the gritty, dangerous, and highly illegal underground poker games of Texas.

We will explore the legendary “Moneymaker Effect” that triggered the massive online poker boom, and examine how the WSOP completely changed the way the world views a simple card game.

From the smoky backrooms of the Horseshoe Casino to the massive ballrooms of the modern mega-resorts, the stakes have never been higher.

How a Texas Mobster Invented the WSOP

After fleeing a massive turf war in Dallas, Binion relocated to Las Vegas and opened Binion’s Horseshoe Casino on the gritty, neon-drenched Fremont Street in 1951.

In 1970, Binion decided to host a massive promotional event at the Horseshoe. He invited exactly seven of the most famous, heavily bankrolled underground poker players in the country (mostly Texans) to his casino.

They voted for Johnny Moss, and Benny Binion awarded him a small silver cup, officially declaring him the first “World Champion of Poker.”

The following year, in 1971, Binion made a crucial, industry-changing decision: he changed the format from a cash game to a “Freezeout” tournament with a massive $5,000 entry fee.

The Moneymaker Effect: The Boom of 2003

However, it remained largely a closed community; the participants were almost exclusively professional gamblers, wealthy businessmen, and seasoned Las Vegas veterans.

Moneymaker traveled to the Horseshoe, sat down against a field of 839 hardened professionals, and against all mathematical odds, won the entire tournament.

ESPN broadcasted the entire tournament, utilizing the newly invented “Hole Card Camera,” which allowed the television audience to finally see exactly what cards the players were holding in secret.

The following year, in 2004, the Main Event field size exploded from 839 players to an astonishing 2,576 players, permanently changing the scale of the WSOP forever.

The Modern Era: Massive Fields and Corporate Control

The massive explosion of player entries triggered by the online poker boom completely overwhelmed the small, historic Binion’s Horseshoe casino.

The modern WSOP is a massive logistical undertaking, featuring over 80 distinct “bracelet events” spread out over two months, covering every conceivable variation of poker (Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Razz, etc.).

In 2022, the WSOP moved again, taking up residence on the massive, glamorous Las Vegas Strip at the Horseshoe and Paris casinos, signaling its final transition from an underground hustle to mainstream entertainment.

The Growth of the World Series

The Era The Field Size The Winner
1971 6 (First Freezeout Format) Johnny Moss
1980 73 Stu Ungar
2004 2,576 Greg Raymer
2010 7,319 Jonathan Duhamel
The Current State A massive corporate spectacle requiring thousands of dealers and tables. The $10,000 entry fee remains unchanged since 1972.

More Than Just Money: The WSOP Hardware

  • The Ultimate Status Symbol: In professional golf, players chase Green Jackets. In poker, players chase the WSOP Gold Bracelet. It is the absolute highest honor in the game.
  • The Mark of Greatness: Winning one bracelet is incredibly difficult. Winning multiple bracelets proves the player relies on immense skill, not just a massive run of variance.
  • The Championship Jewelry: The Main Event bracelet is specifically designed every year by luxury jewelers and is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars purely in raw materials.
  • The International Brand: The WSOP has successfully franchised the bracelet, creating massive tournament series around the globe.

It is a massive, two-month carnival of gambling, where fortunes are made and lost on a single flip of a card, all under the intense glare of television cameras.

If you are a fan of the game, making the pilgrimage to Las Vegas during the summer to simply walk the halls of the WSOP is an absolute requirement.
