The Art of Squeezing Cards in Baccarat

This strange, deeply dramatic process is universally known in the casino world as “squeezing” the cards, and it is the absolute soul of high-stakes Baccarat.

To an outside observer, this slow, destructive manipulation of casino property seems entirely pointless, especially since Baccarat is a game of pure, unalterable luck.

The Psychology and Superstition of the Squeeze

Because they have no actual control over the game’s mechanics, high-stakes gamblers desperately seek an “Illusion of Control” to manage the intense stress of betting massive fortunes.

The practice is deeply rooted in ancient Asian gambling superstitions, where many believe they can physically blow away “bad luck” or squeeze out a “good” number.

• The squeeze transforms a rapid, boring 10-second game into a highly dramatic, multi-minute theatrical event
• Online live dealer casinos now use glass tables and special cameras to simulate the squeeze experience digitally
• Players use complex, specific techniques (turning the card sideways) to slowly reveal the number of “pips” on the edge

How to Execute the Perfect Squeeze

The art of the squeeze relies entirely on recognizing the specific geometric layout of the ink “pips” (the suit symbols) printed on standard casino playing cards.

If they see a continuous line across the top, it is a “picture” (Face card or 10), which is worth zero in Baccarat and often causes players to immediately toss the card away in disgust.

The Casino’s Perspective: Ruined Decks as a Cost of Business

However, at a high-stakes VIP Baccarat table, the casino actively expects and completely encourages the total destruction of every single deck used.

A busy VIP Baccarat room might completely destroy and discard hundreds of decks of high-quality playing cards every single night.

While it may look completely absurd to an outsider, it is a deeply respected ritual that transforms a sterile math game into pure, exhilarating theater.
