The History of Poker

The game of poker is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of casinos and competitive gambling.

Tracing the roots of poker is difficult because it evolved from a blend of several ancient card games.

Where Did Poker Originate?

The most direct European ancestor is likely the 16th-century Spanish game “Primero,” which involved bluffing and high stakes.

The French game “Poque” and the German “Pochen” later refined the concepts of betting and bluffing significantly.

• Originated from a mix of European and Asian games
• The concept of bluffing has existed for centuries
• French settlers brought the game to Louisiana

The Game of the American Frontier

From New Orleans, poker exploded in popularity, traveling up the Mississippi River on commercial steamboats.

This era cemented the game’s gritty, romanticized image of outlaws, cowboys, and high-stakes shootouts over cards.

The World Series of Poker and the Internet Age

For most of the 20th century, Seven-Card Stud was the most popular variant played in American casinos.

The true explosion occurred in 2003 when amateur Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event after qualifying online.

From ancient Persian courts to glowing digital screens, poker has proven to be the ultimate survivor of casino games.
